Leo A Daly architects has recently completed Florida Atlantic University's‘s College of Computer Science and Engineering Building. The new building holds the numerous different labs of the Computer Science and Engineering Programs within a building that leads the way for Florida’s academic buildings in technology and sustainability.
The FAU College of Computer Science and Engineering Building is the first LEED Platinum certified building in the state of Florida.Leo A Daly employed both cutting edge technologies and established smart practices when designing the new facility.
In order to regulate temperature in the five story building, the FAU College of Computer Science and Engineering Building uses chilled beam technology as well as geothermal wells. The building is also oriented to minimize heat gain, maintain a standard 78 degrees, and reduce energy costs.
The design of the building takes advantage of its Florida setting. Daylight floods the laboratories, and is also used to heat the building’s hot water. Native vegetation has been used around the FAU College of Computer Science and Engineering Building to encourage biodiversity in the plants and animals around the school. Wetlands and retention ponds have also been created.
The FAU College of Computer Science and Engineering Building also earned points towards its LEED Platinum status with its proximity to public transportation. They further encourage transportation alternatives to driving through the inclusion of bicycle storage and changing rooms in the new building.
Through both simple solutions and advanced technologies the FAU College of Computer Science and Engineering Building encourages sustainability in Florida building practices. Leo A Daly produced a building that provides all the facilities necessary for the school, in a responsible and appealing new package.
